I know, I’ve just said the word running as if its something I know about and those of you that know me personally (and those that know me online) are probably thinking I’ve gone mad. Well, I haven’t… not yet, anyway.
First of all you get to choose the celebrity who talks you through it, and they have the option of Sarah bloody Milligan – what a treat! So I’ve got Sarah Milligan talking me through a very short exercise program that requires nothing but me, some trainers and a bit of pavement.
It starts off with around 8 minutes of running which is separated out into little 60 second pockets whilst you’re starting out. Let’s be honest, I can’t walk up a flight of stairs without genuinely believing I’ll be meeting my maker at the end of it (or half way on a bad day) so the fact I can even complete a bit of running is just… well… nothing short of amazing.
So why do I keep doing it? What’s SO good about it?
Sure – I want to take control of my weight a little. But I don’t want to do it by worrying about every little thing I eat as food is such a source of happiness for me. But also the weight loss has become the cherry on the top, because I didn’t know what it would do for my mind. I’m not particularly anxious at the moment, but I do have pockets of time when I can feel cycles of thoughts happening and it’s an indication to me that it’s time to take a break, or now: go for a run. Running stops your mind wandering through it’s own delicate forest filled with dragons and battles. It stops you spending your Monday night thinking about your Thursday morning. It brings you back: to the here and the now and it’s bloody free.
I’m not writing this to be like “Get running!!” because lord knows I definitely don’t respond to others telling me what to do so I guess as my readers you probably aren’t quite so keen either. So I’m not advising you to even do it. I’m advising you to take the knowledge. Take the knowledge that if you are feeling stressed, anxious or even just a bit rubbish mentally or emotionally; there’s a box of happiness waiting for you at the end of the run and that’s pride, body positivity and no anxiety. I don’t know about you, but I’m already sold.
